Penang Hill Malaysia was the first hill station built in Peninsular Malaysia in the colonial era. It covered the Western Hill, Tiger Hill, Laksamana Hill, Government Hill and the Flagstaff Hill. Located in about 6 kilometers from Georgetown, the sill is the main hill resort of the state. It is 821 meters above the capital city of Penang and called as Bukit Bendera by local people. As the last area of tropical rainforest in Penang, it is a home of various flora and fauna that have been preserved since 1960. It is not as famous as Genting Highlands but has been a well-known attraction for the fresh climate in Penang Malaysia.
Beautiful View from the Top
When the weather is clear, you can see the spectacular view from Penang Hill, including the Langkawi Mountain and the North Kedah. The even more beautiful view is at night when the Georgetown lights up. Most visitors come to enjoy the cool and unpolluted air of the hill. Seeing the forest with 30 meters high trees, the birdlife and the other inhabitants of the deep forest. It also features a Canopy Walk about 22 km from Bellevue Hotel. It is a 220 m long of walkway among the towering trees giving the beautiful hillside views.
Riding on Funicular Train
Riding on the funicular train is the most popular way to reach the top of Penang Hill. Visitors should go from the Air Itam railway station at the hill foot. The train is Swiss design that has been operated since 1923. The funicular systems belong to the oldest one in the world. It is still active to crawl and climb the hills on the 2,007 meters track and needs about 30 minutes to reach the top with the train. Historically, the railway was established for wealthy citizens and British officers in the colonial era. Today, it becomes one of most favorite tourist destinations in Penang. It is always fully visited on weekends and holidays.
On the other hand, the tourists also can reach the top by hiking from the Penang Botanic Garden’s quarry. The route is about 8 km long with many marks that lead the hikers to climb in about one hour. At the top, there are some restaurants, gardens, a police station, a post office, Bellevue Hotel, and the original funicular train station since 1897. Penang Hill can become a nice gateway when you need some cooling time as long as the hot weather of Georgetown.
